Sniper Team
Overview
Sniper Team is a experimental large-scale Intruder map that seeks to create the most fleshed out competitive sniping experience possible, inspired by the battle with The End in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Each team starts on opposite corners of a 500x500 meter river valley dotted with landmarks. The only objective is to kill all players on the enemy team; there is no time limit. Careful observation, communication, and aim are the only paths to victory. The map is available in Standard and All Snipers versions.
Sniper Team was made using Unity's terrain system with Blender for buildings and details.
Tools of the Trade
Between the size of the map and Intruder's inclusion of bullet drop and wind, finding and engaging enemies from great distances is a major challenge. The standard version of Sniper Team therefore splits each team into two classes: Snipers wielding sniper rifles and Spotters equipped with scouting equipment, a medkit, and a sidearm. Sniper/Spotter pairs must work together to operate as an effective unit. The All Snipers version of the map gives every player a sniper rifle with light scouting equipment and is suitable for small player counts.
Area of Operations
A forking river splits the valley is split into three islands, each dotted with points of interest including a watchtower, field bases, and valuable supply drops that provide players with additional weaponry some time into the round. These act as effective tactical positions for both teams to scout and snipe from, as well as making it easier for players to keep their bearings and communicate information. The three islands are connected by bridges and a web of ziplines across the river, allowing for risky pushes and flanking maneuvers.
Eye in the Sky
All players are equipped with an active radar in the upper right corner of their screen. The radar will update every ten seconds (indicated by the bar beneath it) and highlight all player-occupied zones on the map to narrow the search area. For the first several minutes of the match, the scan indicates octants of the map; after some time it is upgraded to the Enhanced Radar, which highlights players on a more exact grid to speed the match along.
